The Changed Ones | An adventure based on the ghost ship of Chile

Every culture has a story about the drowned who come back wrong.

In Chiloé, the southernmost archipelago of Chile, they called it El Caleuche: a ghost ship crewed by the dead, blazing with music and light on certain nights. The drowned didn't die. The ship took them. It remade them into something that still walked, still breathed, still remembered your name. Families recognized the faces. The faces didn't recognize them back.

The Changed Ones is the first adventure in Folklore Reborn: a series of D&D 5e modules built on real legends from real places. Not the versions you've seen in movies. The ones that made people bolt their doors.

A rain-soaked fishing village. A ghost ship surfacing on the solstice. Four days. A debt the sea will not forget.

The Changed Ones is built on El Caleuche: the ghost ship legend of Chile's Chiloé Archipelago. A vessel crewed by the drowned, blazing with light on certain nights, surfacing to collect debts paid in flesh. Behind it: the Recta Provincia, a real secret society of sorcerers put on trial in Ancud in 1880. Witnesses testified about the cave, the guardian made from a stolen child, and the lights on the water no honest ship could explain. The court records survived.

The adventure puts your players inside that history. Punta Quemada, a rain-soaked fishing village. Four days until the Noche de San Juan. The ghost ship surfaces that night. Three fishermen went into the water this month. One has been seen on the mudflat at midnight, feet wrong, face blank, mouth moving around a name he cannot find. A widow wants answers the village physically cannot give. A man named Tomás draws ships on wet tavern tables because that is all he has left.

The clock is the tide.
